A Return to Form: BMWs Newest M-Series is a Tempest in a Teapot

That is, it's an exhilarating performance powerhouse packed into a stunning, compact two-door body.

All-new to the lineup, the 2016 BMW M2 introduces a high-powered and pint-sized offering for drivers who prefer the full M performance experience in a smaller, surprisingly affordable package. Considered by many as the successor to the rather short-lived 1 Series M coupe, the rear-wheel drive M2 takes design cues from the current BMW M235i, but this is no copycat. It owns its badging from the bold front fascia to the aggressive quad exhaust tips.

The New 2016 BMW M2: What We Know So Far

  • Engine: twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine creating 365 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque
  • Nürburgring lap time: a mere 7:58
  • Top speed: limited to 155 miles per hour
  • 0 - 60 time: 4.4 seconds with standard transmission, 4.2 with optional seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission
  • Arrival at Hendrick BMW stores: Spring 2016

The EPA has not yet rated the new model for fuel economy, and the automaker has yet to list any definitive pricing information. It will likely start at a lower price than performance cars like the M3 or M5 to offer drivers an easy entry into the high-performance luxury segment. So if you've been waiting for the perfect new sports car, this might be it.
