Big news for BMW--and we mean big.

This German luxury car brand is finally making the plunge into the world of full-sized three-row crossovers. While the impressive BMW X5 has been holding down the fort for some time now, and does offer a third row for children and adults (at least for short trips), the upcoming BMW X7 Sports Activity Vehicle is the first of its kind for this automaker.

What We Know About the Upcoming BMW X7 3-Row SAV

Looking for BMW X7 release dates, pricing info, specs, model trims, and more?

You may have to wait--since this model is still technically in "prototype" mode, and not production mode, BMW is keeping some of the details tightly under wraps until the official release.

Here's what we know so far:

  • First three-row BMW SAV really designed for consistent seven-passenger seating
  • Six-passenger seating will be an option, with available middle-row Captain's Chairs
  • The back row is suited to fit most adults (6-foot and above should probably opt for the middle row)
  • It's the largest SAV that BMW has ever built
  • xDrive will be standard on all trims, at least for the first year of sales
  • The BMW X7 is expected to offer either a 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine or a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine--no power specs yet
  • We can expect to see an eight-speed automatic transmission offered
  • A BMW X7 iPerformance xDrive model is expected to be offered in the lineup
  • Tech will include BMW's Operating System 7.0
  • We can expect to see the all-new BMW X7 go on sale in early 2019 as either a 2019 or 2020 model

The BMW X7 SAV made Car & Driver's "25 Cars Worth Waiting For" list a while back, and it's looking like they were right.

BMW Group shared a brief look into the production line--not too far away, in Spartanburg, SC--to show just what goes into the making of the all-new, first-ever BMW X7:
